Christmas Celebrations
We have had a wonderful time celebrating with family and friends this week. We did our special Christmas music at church last Sunday…our choir director, Suzi Lawson, did a fine job of choosing beautiful songs for us to sing and we had a few past choir members (who no longer live here but were in for Christmas)join us. We concluded the service with the Hallelujah Chorus and it was like the “Cold Spring Tabernacle Choir”. Magnificent! Pastor Doug mentioned to someone that he thought we should conclude every service that way! On Christmas Eve, we celebrated Communion at our church as a family. Our Pastor, Doug LaPointe, serves Communion for several hours on Christmas Eve so that families can come together and partake of the Lord’s sacrament. After the Lord’s Supper, we had supper at Doyle and Suzanne’s…tacos! It was so good, and a nice change from ham/turkey that was to follow. We have exchanged gifts on Christmas eve for several years now. I think it started when Suzi and Kristi were little and wanted to be home for Christmas morning. On Christmas day, we had dinner at our house. There were 15 of us, and it was so much fun!

The day after Christmas, we celebrated Ben’s birthday at Suzanne and Doyle’s (barbeque). Rob and Carla came in from KY and are here in Bristol for a few days. It has been a busy but wonderful week!
Suzanne and Doyle’s tree was HUGE this year! It must have been 12 or 13 feet tall. Kenneth said that when he and Suzanne loaded it on his truck, more hung off the tail gate than was in the truck! Suzanne wanted a BIG tree and she got it!

Recording
Doyle and the guys have completed a new recording that should be out in March. They have been working on it for about 2 months, when they could find the time to get together at the studio. They recorded this one at Josh Swift’s studio and some at Mike Roger’s studio, I think. In the next few weeks, they are headed to the studio at Crossroads to start recording some special songs that will be a part of a new opportunity for you and for us. More about that later on…
Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Herndon, VA
We are excited about 2 concerts that will take place at Holy Cross . Lutheran Church in Herndon, VA in March. On March 16, there will be both 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm shows at the church. The DC area has long been a fertile field for bluegrass and we are so pleased to be headed back to Holy Cross. You can buy tickets for both of these shows right on our website. Look for that show in our schedule and click on the BUY TICKETS button. It will lead you to our store where you can get your tickets. There are a limited number of seats for each of these shows, and I have been processing orders for them at a pretty good clip considering it’s 3 months away! I hope all of you in the DC area will plan to come!
All of us at Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver hope that 2013 will be a prosperous year for you and your family and that God will do great things in your lives!
All the best,
Sister

Hi Doyle. I am just a little country boy from deep in the mountains, and i don’t think we’ve met other than just passing each other a couple times. But i’d like to ask you to consider me the next time you might be looking for a candidate for your school of music. I don’t really have much to offer you so that you can hear me sing, but i can be found on youtube if you search for the georgia highlanders. thank you for taking the time to consider me. hope you ave a blessed new year

Hello Hope you are well .I was wondering if you play more gospel songs when you play at a church?
We pretty much do all gospel songs at a church, unless the people who is putting on the concert asks for something else.
Sorry,we couldn’t make Jekyll Island, but we plan to see you at Morningside Baptist Church in February.
Looking foward to seeing you in Herndon in March. Have not seen you in 2 years so will be great. Hope Suzanne can attend this year.
Dianne, I will have to make the trip north some other time, hopefully. That weekend is the NASCAR Race in Bristol and our Ruritan Club will be picking up trash after the race.

Hi I enjoy your pure and progressing music brother Doyle Lawson and it is a blessing to hear the unchanging gospel of Jesus in your songs ..Tell Josh and Tobi i said howdy its been a long time miss you/great stuff on the hounddog Josh!! Miss picking with ya bro.. God bless:0)
50 years ago today I began my professional career in bluegrass. I arrived in Nashvile on a Trailways bus in the wee hours of the morning and called out to Jimmy Martin’s house to tell him that I had arrived. Barbara said that he wasn’t home but knew that I was due in and when he called in ,she would tell him to come and get me. After waiting for a good while,I began to wonder if he was going to show and if he didn’t , how I was going to get back to east TN as I didn’t have bus fare to get back home. But in walks Jimmy accompanied by the banjo player I was hoping to replace, Billy Edwards ( a great and underrated banjo picker in my opinion) who moving back to High Point, NC. So we get into Jimmy’s car and he said “get your banjo out of the case” , and I said “here?” And he said “Yes Here!!(with authority). I get it out and he told me to play Cripple Creek , I did and he said ,”you’re hired”! My first thought was, well that was pretty easy. Boy was I ever wrong. Rehearsals were intense to say the least. But I wouldn’t change a thing if I could. I was so fortunate to have started my career with one of the best that’s ever been. For an 18 year old kid from east TN to be onstage in 1963 with Jimmy Martin, Paul Williams, Lois Johnson and Kirk Hanserd was an experience I have never forgotten. And then to be able to go to work with the man whose banjo playing I so admired and patterned my banjo playing after, mr tone and timing,JD Crowe. I spent around 5 years plus in JD’s band and we were always looking for ways to be innovative and yet keep the roots of bluegrass music intact. In 1971 I was asked to become a member of The Country Gentlemen and it was an important move in my career . I had long admired their music because they were known to think outside the box when it came to song selection. Charlie Waller was one of the greatest vocalist our music has ever had. Bill Emerson made every note count in his banjo picking and had an ear for a good song, second to no one. Bill Yates laid down a solid bass rhythm for us to pick to and possessed a work ethic that you rarely see. Incredible stamina who could and did go that extra mile so often needed in those days. It was an exciting time for me. In 1979 I felt the need to try my wings solo and so began what will soon be 34 years of being a band leader. And it has been an exciting and joyful journey with a few rough spots along the way. As you well know, there has been numerous personnel changes over the years but that’s to be expected. I suppose that I’m like most folks in that I would rather things things stay the same but I know they won’t and I do think that many times it only adds to the excitement of my musical journey. I have tried and continue to try and keep my music fresh and innovative for your listening pleasure. I know that some have questioned some of my undertakings but I truly feel that I have stayed within the boundaries of the bluegrass music that our first generation folks put down . I have gone back ans listened to our pioneer’s recordings and feel good about my efforts. And so here I am, 50 years later and I am as excited about the music in every aspect, as I was at the beginning . From the depths of my heart, I thank everyone who ever stood on stage with me and those who work behind the scene , all of the people who have shown your support by coming to the concerts and buying the recordings, and most of all almighty God and His only begotten Son Jesus for for watching over me and guiding my footsteps when I may have taken the wrong road of life. God bless you all and stay with me , it’s a great ride!

Thanks Doyle. Very interesting to read. This would be a good start for your autobiography which we hope you will write some day.
