Born January 2nd, 1981 into a musical family from West Virginia, Corey Hensley says he can never remember a time in his life when music wasn’t present. From birth, Corey was around his parent’s band that traveled the area playing southern and country gospel music. Corey’s father, John, was and still is a great singer himself and at a very early age it was evident that gift had been passed onto Corey. Corey was first introduced to guitar at six years old, and from that point on it was no turning back. As he was around music more and more, Corey began picking up many other instruments along the way, finally settling in on bass as his main instrument; all the while also learning to play banjo, mandolin, and steel guitar as well. As he grew into his teenage years, Corey continued to play in bands alongside his father while also expanding his musicianship by playing with several different bands in many genres. In doing so, at a young age Corey quickly gained an understanding of how music fits together.
Drawing inspiration from the music of his parents, the music of the church, and fellow musicians he came to know Corey began creating a sound all his own and people started taking notice. Not only being recognized as a talented instrumentalist, but as a powerful singer with a gift for delivery. When Corey sings, he has the power to deliver a song in such a way that it speaks to every person in the room. His voice pierces the hearts of everyone who hears him sing. While traveling with a group known as “Change of Heart”, Corey began to grow into the gifted songwriter that he is today. Corey is well known for his ability to beautifully; yet simply, express feelings in the form of song.
When Doyle offered Corey the job in 2009, it seemed like perfect timing. Corey says that he “has enjoyed every minute of working with one of the true living legends of bluegrass music”. Corey is the proud father of two beautiful children, Trenton and Alyson. When he is not on the road, usually Corey is still found busy with music; either in a writing session or recording a studio session.
